Haidian district of Beijing will invest a total of 3.5 million yuan on rejuvenating rare ancient trees, reported Beijing Youth Daily on Monday.
The project is set to start at the end of this month and should be completed by the end of November.
Haidian district has more than 14,500 ancient trees, including 207 under first-class protection.
The main species are sabina chinensis, oriental arborvitae, pinus tabulaeformis carr, lacebark pine, sophora japonica L.
The district government has called on three specialist companies to investigate 260 ancient trees and extend their life through bracket supports, soil improvement, nutritional supplements, tree hole repair and tree bark complementary planting.
The district has been investigating the health of its ancient trees since 2007 and has classified them according to their age, species and protection class. So far, it has invested 796,000 yuan on the rejuvenation of 196 ancient trees.
