Li Qiankuan, a member of China's top advisory body
CPPCC and director general of Changchun Film Studio, expressed
on Monday that Chinese blockbusters should be judged on ordinary
people's tastes, not only for pursuing Oscar honors.
"Audiences' opinions and expectations or criticisms from film
critics are helpful for the development of Chinese film industry.
Without them, we would feel neglected," Li said.
Since many Chinese blockbusters have put the big budget
investment and mega production ahead of the content, Li Qiankuan
said that the spectacle of the movie is only one perspective of
cinematograph, profound theme and lively characters are more
important.
He criticized that competing for Oscar should not be the
ultimate goal of our Chinese filmmakers.
Li said movies favored by Chinese ordinary people are destined
to be recognized by world cinema. “It is pathetic that our
filmmakers only made movies to win an Oscar. Chinese filmmakers
should stand on our country's land. If a film could not be
liked by Chinese people, even if it was awarded at Academy Awards,
it was not a good movie in my mind."
He added that a Chinese blockbuster could deliver the real and
profound eastern culture is regarded to be an international one,
whether it was awarded or not, it deserves people's respects.
