Quincy Jones, the well-known American music impresario, record
producer, film composer and 26-time Grammy Awards winner was
appointed culture and art consultant for the
Beijing Olympic Games.
On behalf of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of
the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), BOCOG Executive Vice President Liu
Jingmin awarded Jones the certificate of appointment at a ceremony
in Beijing on Monday.
In a musical career that has spanned six decades, Quincy Jones,
born in 1933, has earned his reputation as a renaissance man of
American music. He has distinguished himself as a bandleader,
songwriter, producer, arranger, film composer and record label
executive, and outside of music, he's also written books, produced
major motion pictures, and helped create television series.
Jones has produced the famous charity song of We Are the
World penned by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. He
collaborated with 45 top musicians on this project, which raised
and donated over US$50 million to African famine sufferers in
1985.
In May this year, during his first visit to China, Jones
expressed his willingness to compose for the Beijing Olympics in an
effort to join the preparatory work for the Games.
