The great national interest in sports in China also is reflected in news coverage of Beijing's preparations for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games.Promising "one of the best Olympic Games in history," the Beijing municipal government announced plans to spend 180 billion yuan on infrastructure construction in the nation's capital, including 142 major projects such as express transportation networks, environmental protection and the construction of communications networks. The Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee in 2002 completed public bidding for the design and construction of venues for the Olympics. The committee continued work on approving sponsors and formulating market development plans while assisting the State Council and Beijing municipal government to promulgate and implement laws and regulations protecting the intellectual property rights of the Olympics. As for the Chinese sports community itself, it announced goals to take advantage of the opportunity as Olympic hosts by striving to qualify for all the events of the Games, to rank among the first three nations in terms of gold medals and total number of medals won, to make breakthroughs in some team and individual events, and to make every effort to become a sports powerhouse in the world. In May 2002 the International Wushu Federation, founded in 1990 in Beijing, made a presentation before the IOC president Jacques Rogge and Executive Committee members as part of its efforts to have Wushu (Kungfu, or martial arts) included in the 2008 Olympics.
