Local travel agencies announced over the weekend that they have stopped offering package tours to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand due to the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome.
The move comes of the heels of an announcement by the National Tourism Administration on Friday that travel to the three countries is banned as they have been declared SARS- infected areas by the World Health Organization.
Last Wednesday, Malaysia banned all Chinese travelers from visiting the country in order to prevent the spread of SARS.
Thirty-two local travel agencies that are allowed to offer package tours to overseas destinations have been busy this weekend informing customers that their trips to the three destinations are canceled.
"We have several hundred tourists registered for trips to the three countries. When we tell them the reason for the cancellation and say sorry to them, they have all shown understanding," said Hao Ming, of Jin Jiang Tours Ltd, "We will refund them later."
The situation is similar at other travel agencies around the city, but so far officials don't know how many travelers will be affected by the ban. Individuals travelling on business can still visit the three countries.
Several agencies are recommending Japan and South Korea as alternative destinations.
