Placido Domingo is on his way back to Shanghai, fulfilling a promise he made more than a year ago. He will perform in concert with two world-renowned sopranos at the Shanghai Grand Stage on December 1.
In January last year, the opera master gave his first recital in the city. His splendid performance transfixed the audience at that time. However, while singing an aria from Puccini's "Tosca", Domingo made a little slip due to his suffering from a serious cold.
Nevertheless, the audience applauded him enthusiastically and encouraged him to go on.
Domingo was deeply moved by this reaction and vowed to return to Shanghai to sing for the audience again to make up for his inability to perform at his best due to his cold.
This time he will be accompanied by sopranos Ana Maria Martinez and Zhang Liping.
Ana Maria Martinez has been performing with Domingo since 1996.
As for Zhang Liping, though not well known to Chinese audiences - she spends most of her time abroad - she has been cast in the leading roles of more than 20 operas, such as Mimi in "La Boheme", Cio-Cio-San in "Madama Butterfly" and Violetta in "La Traviata".
Apart from the distinguished sopranos, Domingo has also invited Karl Sollak, the renowned Austrian conductor, to take the baton for the concert.
