Lin Hwai-min, together with the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre which he founded, will present a dream vision of contemporary dance in a bamboo grove at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on November 14 and 15.
As one of the leading contemporary choreographers of the Chinese-speaking world, Lin Hwai-min founded Cloud Gate in 1973, naming the company after a beautiful legend.
Legend has it that Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China, a ritual dance that originated 5,000 years ago.
The company's rich repertoire has its roots in Asian myths, folklore, and aesthetics, but it brings to these age-old beliefs and stories a contemporary and universal perspective with two-dozen dancers whose training includes Tai Chi, meditation, Chinese Opera movement, modern dance, and ballet.
"Bamboo Dream", a poetic and lyrical piece, is Lin's first work of the new millennium.
"There is no story line to this production. However, I have depicted scenes representing the seasons and the elements: spring wind, summer clamor, winding path, autumn spirits, clearing after rain, midnight and winter snow," said Lin smiling.
These scenes are accompanied by the creation of an idyllic mood.
Many insiders are eager to see how Lin has managed to grow a bamboo grove on the stage of Shanghai Grand Theatre.
Qian Shijin, deputy general manager of the theatre, said: "Though sometimes contemporary dances meet with a cold response from the audience, we firmly believe Cloud Gate will touch the viewers with its unique aesthetics and win enthusiastic acclamation."
