Light Rail Route Going into Trial Operation in Northeastern City
A light rail system has gone into trial operation on Wednesday in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin province, and eight Chinese-made light rail cars are being used on the 14-kilometer route.

It is planned that 36 light rail cars are expected to carry 140,000 passengers per day by the end of 2004.

The industrial city has a total of 773-km of roads in the city proper. The number of automobiles in the city rose by 15.5 percentand length of roads and highways by three percent in recent years.

The city of Chungchun started to design its urban light rail system back in 1990s in part of its effort to improve its transport infrastructure and environment.
