New Boeing Plane Takes off from HK

A new Boeing plane has taken off from Hong Kong, in an attempt to break the record for making the longest non-stop flight by a commercial jet.

Piloted by American captain Suzanna Darcy-Hennemann, the Boeing 777-200LR is flying east from Hong Kong, over North America and is due to land at London's Heathrow Airport.

Boeing 777 Program vice president, Lars Andersen highlights the efficiency of the airplane.

"We've done this to really emphasize not only the range capability but the superior operating efficiency of the airplane. In this day and age of high fuel prices, this airplane is going to offer our customers some terrific efficiency," said.

The flight will take about 23 hours, and cover more than 20,300 kilometers.

The record-breaking attempt is part of Boeing's fierce competition with its European rival, Airbus SAS.
