America West, US Airways to Merge

America West, the eighth-largest US domestic carrier, is in advanced talks to merge with the bankrupt US Airways.

The Financial Times reports that the deal would combine America West and the sixth-largest US domestic carrier to create the fourth-largest airline in the United States.

The combined entity could remain financially feeble as both airlines are loss-making and have weak balance sheets.
