Northern Jiaotong University in Beijing and the University of Southampton of the United Kingdom established an R&D center on ITS (Intelligent Traffic System) last Friday.
ITS, featuring advanced technologies like collection and handling of information, telecommunications, and intelligent control, has been widely regarded as a new way to resolve traffic problems.
The center is jointly funded by China's Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Trade and Industry of the United Kingdom.
Students studying at the center will receive a diploma from the British university.
The center's chief focus will be Beijing's ITS project as the city prepares to host the 2008 Olympic Games.
