Shanghai, China's leading industrial center, has become the first city in the country to broadcast digital television programs on a trial basis.
As long as local residents have access to wide-band cable television and buy a video tuner and card, they are able to watch digital television programs and get information about stock markets.
There are 30 channels of digital television programs covering film, TV series, music, news, stocks and weather information. In mid-October, new items such as football and basketball programs, will be added.
China has approved Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen cities to develop digital television. Thanks to a city-wide transformation scheme, more than 1.7 million households in Shanghai have access to two-way wide-band cable.
