The Satellite Conference on Differential Geometry and Global Analysis opened at the Nankai University in Tianjin on Friday.
The conference is part of the 2002 International Congress of Mathematics (ICM) in China.
The three-day meeting has attracted over 60 experts on differential geometry from all over the world including Shiing-shen Chern, a world-famous Chinese-American mathematician.
A total of 14 mathematicians are expected to give reports on differential geometry, described as one of the most popular topics in mathematics research by Zhang Weiping, chairman of the current meeting.
The ICM, to be held in Beijing on Aug. 20, comprises 46 satellite meetings held in such Chinese cities as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xi'an and Lhasa, and also in Hong Kong, Macao, Taipei, Moscow, Singapore, Kyoto, Seoul and Hanoi.
