China to Put an End to 'Scientific Research Boss'

The chief of China's supreme scientific research organization said on April 9th that China would take action to eradicate the growth of "Scientific Research Boss" and put an end to this phenomenon that threatens the country's scientific research.

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) President Lu Yongxiang stated that CAS is always opposed to "Scientific Research Bosses" who severely violate scientific ethics and laws and such black sheep should be punished in accordance with laws after facts are hunted out.

Since the right of examining and approving applications for scientific research funds is overly centralized on certain departments and procedures are far from transparent, some persons scramble for scientific research capital by unscrupulous means in some scientific research institutions, commonly known as "Scientific Research Boss".

"CAS always opposes, disapproves of and never advocates 'Scientific Research Boss'." said Lu.

He pointed out that most "Scientific Research Bosses" regard their students as their "employees." Instead of inspiring students' potential in research, they take the advantage of their students to finish their research projects, which severely harms the students' academic life.

Lu indicated that China should make scientific research administration more democratic and transparent and reinforce external supervision so as to terminate this phenomenon.
