China-made Chips to Be Embedded in TVs

One of China's leading television manufacturers Hisense will use a new system-on-chip (soc), which was developed by itself, in its high-definition televisions, the People's Daily reported Monday.

The socs, named "hiview," will be put into the company's new products from early July on, said Zhou Houjian, chair of the board of the Qingdao-based Hisense Group, quoted by the leading newspaper.

An assessment team of experts organized by the Ministry of Information Industry described the soc as the first of its kind developed by Chinese which has been successfully industrialized.

China is now the world's biggest TV manufacturer, but the country lags behind developed countries in core advanced technologies in this industry. Almost all Chinese TV manufacturers use foreign socs.

The Hisense "hiview" chip contains more than 7 million transistors, which parallels to world leading technological level, according to the newspaper.

Zhou, the engineer-turned board chairman, said his company has gained 30 patents, including nine invention patents, for the chip, which will be used in both high-end and low-end Hisense products.
