A fierce explosion rocked an apartment building in the northern Russian city of Arkhangelsk, killing several people, the Russian Itar-Tass News Agency reported Tuesday.  

The blast occurred early Tuesday morning, damaging the entrance to the nine-storied building which has 45 apartments.

Police sealed the area and firefighters had also rushed to the scene.
