The care home blaze in Scotland has claimed 12 lives after another two women died in hospital Sunday.

Four other women and one man remain in hospital, according to a BBC report.

Investigators are still trying to find out why the fire, which started in a storage cupboard at the two-storey Rosepark Nursing Home in Uddingston near Glasgow at about 0400 GMT Saturday, should have killed so many elder people.

In some cases, the elderly victims were rapidly overcome by fumes because they had their bedroom doors open.

The cupboard where the fire started was on the same upper floor as the resident' bedrooms.

"The fire damage itself has spread only three or four meters either side of the cupboard, so it is not extensive by any means," said Strathclyde firemaster Jeff Ord.

The care home with 43 registered beds looks after elderly people and those suffering from mental illness and needing terminal care. It also caters for disabled young people.

The BBC report said a check on the home's safety equipment was carried out only two months ago and no faults were discovered.
