The China-European Union Association and the Greek Embassy in China held a reception in Beijing on Thursday to celebrate the enlargement of the EU.
On April 16, heads of state or government of the EU member states signed an accession treaty that will officially bring ten mainly Eastern European nations into the existing 15-nation bloc on May 1, 2004. The signing took place in Athens, Greece, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU.
Chen Haosu, president of the association, and Charalambos Rocanas, Greek Ambassador to China, addressed the reception.
Chen said that EU enlargement will create greater potential for its development and expressed his hope that the new members will integrate their traditional friendship with China into the EU's future cooperation with China.
