Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Jacques Chirac agreed in a telephone conversation Thursday that a diplomatic solution should be found to the Iraqi crisis, the Kremlin said.
"Having discussed the outcome of the latest UN Security Council session on Iraq, the leaders of the two countries noted coinciding positions in favor of using political and diplomatic methods to solve the Iraq problem...," said a Kremlin statement.
It said both leaders, due to meet next week in Paris, had agreed to pursue "close joint action with these aims."
