Tian Jiyun, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met here Monday with Guillermo Alvarez, president of the chamber of deputies of Uruguay.

Tian said China-Uruguay ties have seen steady development since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1988. The exchanges of high-level visits have been frequent, and trade and economic cooperation is faring well, Tian said, adding China and Uruguay have shared views and supported each other in international affairs.

He noted that the NPC and the Uruguayan national congress have maintained close contacts and cooperation, expressing the belief that the inter-parliamentary exchanges will enhance the mutual understanding of the two peoples and promote the two nations' ties.

The NPC and the Chinese government value relations with Uruguay, Tian said.

Alvarez agreed with Tian on the smooth progress of bilateral ties, and thanked China for its long-term support and help. He expressed his conviction that their political and economic ties will record constant progress in the future.
