General Liang Guanglie, chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), met with Italian army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Gianfranco Ottogalli, and his party in Beijing Monday.
Liang, also a member of the Chinese Central Military Commission, said the people of China and Italy had long been friends although the two countries were geographically far apart.
The friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries and their armed forces had developed steadily ever since the Sino-Italian diplomatic ties were forged more than 30 years ago, he said.
The frequent high-level contacts between military officials and the effective exchanges and cooperation of the two armed forces encouraged both sides to believe that bilateral military relations had a bright future, he said.
He also briefed the Italian guests on China's national defense policy and military development.
Ottogalli said Italy and China had friendly ties.
China had made outstanding achievements in recent years with rapid economic development, he said.
China's armed forces were likewise marching towards the direction of modernization at an amazing speed, he said, adding that their experience was worthy for Italy to learn.
Both countries followed the same path of fewer but better troops, he noted.
Italy's armed forces were ready to make concerted efforts with the Chinese armed forces to be actively involved in such activities as the United Nations' peace-keeping operations and anti-terrorist campaigns, so as to contribute themselves in safeguarding the world peace.
