Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said on Tuesday that the military ties between Russia and the United States had reached a "new level" and the current task is to realize it with concrete measures.
To combat common threats and challenges, the military departments of the two countries had been conducting frequent contacts, said Ivanov when meeting with Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard Myers, who arrived in Moscow Monday night for a three-day visit.
The military cooperation between the two sides in the Afghan war proved to be good, he added.
Myers expressed the hope to further develop relations with Russian defense minister, while calling for more contacts between junior officers.
Before his talks with Ivanov, Myers toured the Kubinka air force base just outside Moscow and flew in a Su-27UB two-seat fighter. He is expected to meet with Chief of the Russian General Staff Anatoly Kvashnin on Wednesday.
