Chinese Premier Starts Official Visit to Austria
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji arrived here Thursday evening, kicking off a four-day official visit to Austria at the invitation of Austrian Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel.

In a written statement delivered at the airport, Zhu said that China and Austria have enjoyed a long history of friendly contacts and made outstanding contributions to human civilizations.

Zhu spoke highly of the substantial development of bilateral relations and fruitful exchanges and cooperation as a result of the joint efforts by the two sides since they forged diplomatic ties over three decades ago.

He pointed out that China attaches importance to the establishment of long-term and stable friendship and cooperation with Austria and is willing to see Austria's more positive role in European and international affairs.

He said he is glad with the coming meetings with Austrian leaders including Schuessel and people from various walks of life, so as to enhance bilateral understandings, friendship and cooperation in different fields, and continue to make contributions to world peace and development.

This is the first leg of Zhu's European visit. Zhu is also scheduled to attend the Fourth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit and the Fifth EU-China Summit in Denmark, and pay official visits to Denmark and France.
