Qian expressed appreciation for Berger's efforts in promoting China-US ties, which he said are good on the whole despite some existing problems and disagreements.

The vice-premier noted that the two nations share broad common interests and should be able to cooperate amicably in numerous spheres for the benefit of world peace and prosperity.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President George W. Bush will meet for the third time when Jiang visits the United States in October. Qian said he considers the meeting very significant in broadening the two nations' consensus and boosting their constructive and cooperative ties.

He expressed his belief that Jiang's visit will be very fruitful for both nations.

Calling the China-US relationship the most important of bilateral ties, Berger said a powerful China is in the interest of the United States.

He said although he is no longer in office, he is very much concerned about the relationship between the two countries and will make efforts to continue its development.
