Cyprus president reaffirms one-China policy
Adjust font size:

Cyprus firmly sticks to the one-China policy and denounces the secessionist activities of the Taiwan authorities, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos reaffirmed in Nicosia on Monday.

Papadopoulos made the remarks when he received Chinese ambassador to Cyprus Zhao Yali.

Cyprus particularly opposes the attempt to conduct a referendum in Taiwan to promote its "accession to the United Nations," the president added.

During the meeting, Papadopoulos also informed Zhao of the latest developments on the Cyprus question.

The Chinese ambassador expressed China's continuous support for a settlement to the Cyprus question on the basis of relevant UN resolutions and for the immediate implementation of the July 8 Agreement reached last year between Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Meet Ali Talat during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of senior UN official Ibrahim Gambari.
