Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Monday the United Nations' function should be enhanced when he met with New President of UN General Assembly Srgjan Kerim.
"Only when multilateralism be adhered to and the UN's role be strengthened can we handle the challenge and threat effectively, and this has been acknowledged by the international community," Wen said.
He said China has supported the UN reform which would enable all members to better observe the UN charter and safeguard world peace and achieve common prosperity.
The issue of the UN reform should be resolved through consultation and equal discussion by all members, and the reform should aim at taking care of all parties' concern, Wen added.
China has always held that the UN would play a positive and effective role in the international affairs and would like to continue its own efforts in this regard, he said.
During the meeting, Kerim said the UN attaches importance to the role of China in the international affairs and in the UN as China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and the largest developing country.
He said the UN will promote cooperation with China to advocate multilateralism and strengthen the UN authority and efficiency.
Kerim is paying an official visit to China at the invitation of Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi. He was elected in May as president of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly.
