Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday that China is ready to conduct closer cooperation on finance with Luxembourg during a meeting with Luxembourg's Grand Duke Duc Henri.

Wen said China appreciates Luxembourg's support to China on Taiwan and other issues, as well as its call for the European Union to take a positive attitude toward China.

"There are no political obstacles in China-Luxembourg relations and the two countries have maintained mutual understanding and respect," he said.

Wen gave a particular mention to fruitful trade cooperation between the two countries, expressing his willingness to upgrade finance cooperation.

Wen said he is expected to meet the EU leaders during the upcoming 9th Sino-EU summit and hopes to exchange views with them on promoting cooperation and relationship, as well as coordination in international affairs.

He said he also hopes Luxembourg will continue its role in deepening the Sino-EU strategic partnership.

Henri said Luxembourg and China have maintained frequent contacts since they forged diplomatic ties, and the cooperation in all fields is fruitful.

Henri's entourage includes over 100 entrepreneurs. This demonstrates that Luxembourg values trade cooperation with China, Henri said, expressing a wish to cooperate with China on steel, aviation, finance and culture.

He also spoke highly of Beijing's rapid development and its achievements in preparing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Luxembourg's Grand Duke Duc Henri arrived in Beijing on Sunday morning to start a week-long state visit to China from September 3 to 9 at the invitation of President Hu Jintao.
