Strong Earthquake Hits Indonesia's Sumatra

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's South Sumatra Province at around 22:00 (local time) Sunday, an official said.

The epicenter of the quake was at longitude 104 degrees east and latitude 2.45 degrees south, 100 km from the capital of the province, an official from the Jakarta meteorology and geophysics office said.

There has been no immediate report of fatality but land cracking was found in the area. The tremor was felt in Sumatra, neighboring Singapore, and even in Jakarta, the capital of this country.

The neighboring province Bengkulu was also a quake-prone area which was shaken by a massive tremor measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale on June 4, 2000, killing 94 people and leaving hundreds more injured.
