The Chinese government will institute an evaluation system for the natural and living environments of its cities and towns, Wang Guangtao, Minister of Construction said in Beijing Wednesday.
Wang said at a national habitat award ceremony that China wouldimprove urban habitats to realize a sustainable development.
Officials with the Ministry of Construction said the new systemwould be designed to evaluate the conditions of natural and livingenvironments including water and gas supply, sewage and trash treatment, drainage system, city greenbelt, biological diversity, heating system, energy, public transport and cultural relics protection.
Due to the lack of environmental and infrastructure awareness, some Chinese cities and towns were facing challenges both in termsof natural environment and living standards despite the booming economy.
