The port city of Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province has planned to spend 54 billion yuan (US$6.5 billion) on highway construction in the coming 10 years.
According to the plan, 30 kilometers of expressway, 25 kilometers of trunk highway and 25 kilometers of local highway will be built on an annual basis over the 10 years.
By 2012, Shenzhen, which neighbors HK, will have 132 kilometers of highway and 26 kilometers of expressway per square kilometer, and at the same time a number of beltways around the city will be built.
The funds for the construction will be available through government appropriation and the issuance of bonds, said officials with the local transportation authorities.
