Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Tuesday urged the adoption of more vigorous measures to accelerate the improvement of China's public health system.
Wen made the remarks while presiding over an experts' meeting on the subject in Beijing.
After listening to the speeches of the experts, Wen said the combat against SARS has raised people's awareness of the importance of strengthening the public health system.
He said more vigorous measures shall be taken to push forward the improvement of the public health system, which he said should include:
--establishing a rapid response mechanism and improving the disease information network, disease prevention and control network and emergency treatment network;
-- improving laws and regulations on public health emergencies;
-- deepening reform of the medical and public health system, with special attention to strengthening medical and public health facilities in rural areas;
-- strengthening scientific research in disease diagnosis, treatment and epidemic control; and
-- popularizing scientific knowledge on public health and promoting health-building activities among the masses.
Wen said that the nation will definitely recover its losses from the crisis as it continues to make progress. The most important point is to learn from past experiences and lessons.
Speaking at the meeting, Wen also urged steadfast adherence to coordinated economic and social development, coordinated urban and rural development, sustainable growth featuring natural and harmonious co-existence between man and nature and efforts to improve the living standards and health of the people.
