Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee, has urged legislatures at all levels to raise the quality of their work to anew level through implementing the important thought of "Three Represents" and principles adopted at the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Wu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, called on legislators to be fully aware of the importance of their work in order to strengthen the legal system and the rule of law.
Wu made the remarks during an inspection tour from May 31 to June 3 to southwestern Sichuan Province, where he visited hi-tech research and design institutes and companies, a water conservancy construction site, SARS hospitals and rural areas.
The people's congresses have played an increasingly important role in developing the country's socialist democracy and improving the socialist legal system, he said.
The improvement in legislative work will thus contribute to the revitalization of the Party leadership and the nation, make optimal use of the initiatives and creativity of the Chinese people, safeguard the country's unity, maintain social stability and contribute to comprehensive economic and social development, Wu added.
Wu also highlighted the importance of national efforts to defeat SARS and boost economic growth.
