Senior Official Calls for Harsh Crackdown on Crimes

A senior Chinese official has called for harsh crackdown on criminal activities of different kinds to create a sound social environment for implementing the 11th Five-year Program and building a harmonious and well-off society.

This was remarked by Luo Gan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Committee of Political Science and Law under CPC Central Committee, at a national conference on political science and law, which was convened in Beijing from Dec. 5 to 6.

In his speech, Luo praised the country's law-enforcement forces for their effective efforts this year by bringing their functional role into full play in safeguarding state security and social stability.

CPC committees, governments and political science and law departments at different levels should make scientific judgment and accurately recognize the current and future situation in the field of political science and law, he said.

Zhou Yongkang, member of both the Political Bureau and Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and deputy secretary of the Committee of Political Science and Law, also spoke at the conference. He pledged to ensure a stable and peaceful New Year's Day and Spring Festival, which falls on Jan. 29, 2006.
