President Hu Calls for Fostering Military Talents

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday called for fostering new-type military talents and innovating military theory so as to provide more talented people to the armed forces.

Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks in a meeting with the deputies attending the fourth CPC congress of the Chinese PLA University of National Defense.

He urged the university to map out and promote its reform and development by upholding Deng Xiaoping Theory, the important thought of "Three Represents", seriously studying and implementing the essence of the Fifth Session of the Sixteenth CPC Central Committee, and put up and implement a scientific concept of development.

The university is the country's supreme military institution, with a glorious revolutionary tradition, Hu said, noting that it has passed through a splendid course in the past decades.

He urged the university to give top priority to building ideology and politics among all tasks, by way of seriously studying and implementing Mao Zedong's military thought, Deng Xiaoping's thought on building the Army in the new period, and Jiang Zemin's thought on national defense and Army-building.

Also present were senior military officials Guo Boxiong, Cao Gangchuan, Liang Guanglie, Liao Xilong, Chen Bingde, Qiao Qingchen, Zhang Dingfa, and Jing Zhiyuan.

Prior to the meeting, Hu was given a briefing on the general situation of the university, and afterwards, he watched a presentation of an analytic system of battle fields and a drill by cadets who performed in red and blue armies.

The university's Party congress was convened Monday.
