Party Vows to Step up Anti-corruption Efforts

The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee has pledged to "pay efficient attention to problems that have a bearing on the fundamental interests of the people, while stepping up efforts to prevent and punish corruption."

The bureau met Friday to hear a report on Politburo Standing Committee members' participation in the ongoing campaign to maintain the advanced nature of CPC members.

According to the meeting, which was presided over by General Secretary Hu Jintao, the Politburo Standing Committee members recently held a "democratic life" meeting to discuss problems and flaws in their own work. Before the meeting, they sought criticism and opinions from different circles on a broad base.

The Politburo meeting praised the personal participation in the campaign by the Standing Committee members, saying it is of great importance for promote the campaign among the whole Party.

"The Standing Committee is a powerful team with strong fighting capabilities, a united squad holding the principles of democratic centralism, seeking truth and pragmatism, and keeping up with the pace of the times and being enterprising," according to the Politburo meeting.

The meeting said the Standing Committee members are "clear-minded as they have seen the protruding contradictions and problems existing in the process of China's economic and social development."

It called the coming few years a "critical period" for the country to achieve its goal of "building an overall well-off society."
