Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged all visionary political leaders and responsible business heads to work together to realize sustainable development of the world economy. He made the call in a speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit which opened on Friday in Chile.

The Chinese president noted that a sustainable development of the world economy is a major issue of immediate and far-reaching significance. He said it bears on the current development of countries and the future of all mankind.

He pointed to China's own experience with development as showing that every country must go through an evolving process. He said that today's development lays the groundwork of that of tomorrow.

Hu said, "We live on one earth. Safeguarding world peace, promoting common development and win-win cooperation, realizing sustainable development are the common aspirations of people around the world. Let's join hands to increase mutual trust, strengthen cooperation and exchanges, and strive for the balanced, healthy, and sustainable development of the world economy."

The Chinese president also pointed to some development priorities for the world.

Firstly, he said it was essential to ensure the development of developing countries. Developed countries should pay greater attention to the needs of the poor countries and make real efforts to accelerate their growth.

Hu also pointed out the importance of cultivating a scientific mentality of development and striving for an all-round economic and social progress by optimizing economic structure, lowering consumption levels and minimizing pollution. He said stepping up economic and technical cooperation among countries and fostering a fair and equitable environment for competition are essential to achieving lasting peace and sustainable development in the world.
