Survivors and relatives of the victims from Japanese labor camps during World War II demand a public apology and compensation from the Japanese government. On June 29, 2005, their representatives presented a petition endorsed by 230,000 Chinese at Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's residence. In the petition, they've asked the Japanese government to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of over 130 Chinese laborers at the Hanaoka mine in June 1945. Over 50,000 Chinese laborers were forced to work in Japan during the war and 400 of them died at the Hanaoka site alone. (Xinhua photos)
