Indonesia's Aceh to Build 24 Refugee Centers for Tsunami Victims

A total of 24 refugee centers will be built in Indonesia's Aceh province for over 377,400 tsunami victims, who are currently staying in 64 makeshift refugee camps.

Six refugee centers have been set up and the other 18 would be finished in the next three to four weeks, said Budi Admadi Adi Putro, an official in charge of relief efforts in the province.

The refugee centers will provide more permanent housing and other facilities to refugees, added Budi Admadi.

"The moving of tsunami victims from temporary tents to refugee centers will mark a new phase in the relief and reconstruction process," Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Alwi Shihab said.

About 78,395 people have been reported dead and 131,479 are still missing in Aceh province, the worst-hit Indonesian province in the Dec. 26 tsunami, according to local media.
