Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yuan's maiden film Mama will be screened at A Retrospective Section on Chinese Film from 1934 to 1990 at the Venice Film Festival.
A party was held in the Poly Building on Monday night, attended by the former underground director and lead actor Huang Haibo.
This year's Venice Film Festival has established a section called The Secret History of Asian Cinema to celebrate the centennial of Chinese Films. Other films to screen in this session include Springtime in A Small Town and Sisters on Stage.
This film Mama, which was shot in 1989, dealt with a subject that was taboo, namely, unmarried mothers.
The idea of giving attention to vulnerable social groups appealed to many international film festivals. It been screened at more than one hundred film festivals.
