Part of the SARS donation presented by the Central Government to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) will be allocated to 100 schools, kindergarten and educational institutions to improve their SARS preventive ability, the Macao Education and Youth Affairs Bureau said Friday.
The bureau, which will oversee the allocation of donations, said the first batch of goods includes 300 portable infrared thermometers.
Macao has a total of 130 schools. The bureau said that the SARS donations will be further allocated to all these schools. In the past two months, the bureau has appropriated 600,000 patacas (US$72,000) to help schools purchase liquid-soap and sterilized napkins in prevention of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The donation, which arrived in Macao on Tuesday, includes 300 infrared thermometers, 60,000 protective suits, 10,000 pairs of foot covers, 200,000 surgical masks, 50,000 sets of disposable bed sheets, 5,000 pairs of goggles and a variety of SARS-related medicines.
As Macao so far has only one confirmed SARS patient, it planned to use the donations in SARS prevention and control in public places.
