One hundred boxes of SARS quick test kits developed and provided by Chinese mainland were presented to the Department of Health and Hospital Authority of Hong Kong here Tuesday.
Yuen Mo and Ng Ching Fai, Convenors of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) National People's Congress (NPC) Deputies, presented the test kits to P. Y. Lam, Deputy Director ofHealth, and Leong Che-hung, Chairman of Hospital Authority.
The test kits "ELISA" developed by the Beijing BGI-GBI Biotech Co., Ltd. were gifts from the Office of NPC Standing Committee in Beijing, in response to the HKSAR NPC Deputies' request.
Lam noted that Hong Kong and Chinese mainland use different methods for testing SARS, and the introduction of the test kits from mainland, which can be used on 9,000 SARS suspects, would help enhance Hong Kong's accuracy in this regard.
Maria Tam, spokesperson of the HKSAR NPC deputies, said that although Hong Kong experts have already made notable progress in the research in SARS, there is still plenty of room for development.
If experts in the mainland and Hong Kong would further their cooperation in their efforts against the SARS virus, they will make significant contributions to China and mankind in the fight against diseases, Tam said.
