The City University of Hong Kong has purchased over 20 infrared heat detectors from a Shenzhen-based research institution of Qinghua University for its students' exams set for next month.
To prevent the possible spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), universities and middle schools in Hong Kong are prepared to follow the suit of the Hong Kong's airport and land check points to buy or borrow infrared heat detectors.
Hong Kong Polytechnic University has also developed a kind of infrared heat detector. Over 30 middle schools in Hong Kong have approached the university to borrow the infrared heat detectors for body temperature measuring of students.
The trial use of the infrared heat detectors in Hong Kong Polytechnic University among over a dozen of students indicated that the detector has a good performance. Just by pressing the detector on the forehead, one's body temperature can be measured in one second.
Secretary for Education and Manpower Arthur K.C. Li announced Thursday that junior secondary levels would resume classes on April 28.
To facilitate the full resumption of classes in secondary schools, the Education and Manpower Bureau will further strengthen its support and publicity by issuing additional guidelines, supplying more resources and providing up-to-date information, he said.
In a related development, Hong Kong Jockey Club declared that it will donate 100 million HK dollars (US$12.8 million) to secondary, primary an special schools to hire cleaners and buy preventive materials.
