The first 77 Romanian soldiers will leave for Iraq on Thursday to take part in an international peacekeeping force.
A ceremony was held on Wednesday at the base of Infantry Battalion 811 to mark the beginning of the deployment.
Under the command of Italy's Infantry Brigade, the Romanian troops will carry out security checks and patrols in southern Iraq.
The deployment of Romanian troops will be completed by July 29.
