A government imposed by the United States and Britain will lead to a situation of resistance and confrontation in Iraq, said the Costa Rican daily La Nacion Tuesday.
In an editorial entitled "Time for Multilateralism," the daily considered as "erroneous" the decision of US Defense Secretary Ronald Rumsfeld to exclude Germany, France and Russia from a military presence in Iraq.
This fact will aggravate the already serious differences produced by the conflict, it said.
La Nacion urged Washington to reconsider its decision so as to repair the multilateral system of the United Nations upon which world peace has rested over the past 50 years.
The Costa Rican newspaper proposed the deployment of a multilateral peacekeeping force in Iraq and the establishment of a legitimate government that represents every sector.
The newspaper supported the continuation of the oil-for-food program and resumption of the work of the UN arms inspectors headed by Hans Blix in Iraq.
