US President George W. Bush on Monday asked Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar to prevent Syria from accepting fugitive members of the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein, according to Spanish official sources.
Bush asked Aznar, whose country enjoys good relations with Arab countries, by telephone, to persuade Syria not to become a "haven for undesirable individuals," according to the sources.
The United States claims that Syria has weapons of mass destruction and is providing refuge to Iraqi officials fleeing their country. But both charges have been denied by Syria.
Bush and Aznar talked for 40 minutes about the Iraqi situation after the ouster of Saddam, the sources said.
