The Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Bangla, a forum of Muslim clerics and intellectuals, on Sunday organized a march to the American Center in Kolkata, joining the world-wide protest against the US-led attack on Iraq.
Raising anti-US and anti-UK slogans, at least 5,000 people began the procession from the Shaheed Minar at the center of the metropolis, but police stopped them about 150 meters from the American Center, where they staged a protest meeting, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The meeting was addressed by Furfura Sharif head Hajrat Maulana Saifuddin Siddiqui and a number of poets and intellectuals. They called for a boycott of American and British goods to protest the attack on Iraq, PTI said.
Police said that the protest march went off peacefully and no untoward incident was reported.
