US marines were operating near the key Iraqi town of Tikrit on Sunday, Captain Frank Thorp said at the US Central Command.
"Task Force Tripoli has moved north (from Baghdad) and is currently conducting operations in the vicinity of Tikrit," Thorp said.
Thorp said Task Force Tripoli was made up of the elements of the 1st Marines Expeditionary Force.
Tikrit, which has a population of 200,000, is about 150 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Baghdad. It is now still under the control of Iraqi forces.
