The General Committee of the United Nations General Assembly has decided to postpone considering a request by the group of Arab members to hold a special session on Iraq.
Richard Sydenham, spokesman for the General Assembly, told a press conference Thursday that the chairman of the General Committee decided to postpone consideration on the request "under the current circumstances."
Therefore, he said the General Committee would not meet on the request on Friday morning as scheduled.
Yemen, current chairman of the League of Arab States, sent a letter to Jan Kavan, chairman of the 57th Session of the General Assembly, early this week calling for an inclusion of the Iraq issue on its agenda.
The letter also urged the General Assembly to pass a resolution calling for a cease-fire in Iraq and respect of Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Such an initiative needs support of 15 members of the 28-memberGeneral Committee.
