German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday cautiously welcomed the remarks by US President George W. Bush that the United Nations could play a vital role in post-war Iraq.
"If that is or can be the common position, then I would be happy with it," said Schroeder.
Germany has called for giving UN the central role in reconstruction and peace-keeping in post-war Iraq.
Schroeder will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Jacques Chirac in St. Petersburg on Friday for talks which are expected to focus on situation in post-war Iraq.
