Post and telecommunications

 

Beijing’s postal communications service can reach every country and region in the world. The city’s domestic direct dial (DDD) telephone service reaches some 2,300 other Chinese cities and its International Direct Dial (IDD) service links the city with some 260 countries and regions in the rest of the world.

 

In 2003, the postal and telecommunication sector achieved added value of 17.48 billion yuan, up by 12.4 percent from the previous year. The number of household telephone subscribers reached 6.804 million, an increase of 3.8 percent over the preceding year, and the number of mobile phone users reached 10.956 million, an increase of 19.2 percent.

 

Radio and TV stations

 

Beijing TV Station offers 19 channels of programs. Digital TV channel is in trial operation now. As high as 99.9 percent of local residents have access to radio and TV broadcast. Cable TV program subscribers had accounted for 57.9 percent at the end of 2003.
